What Happens When Your Brain Watches Itself?

MIND CAKE PODCAST 13th JANUARY 2026

MIND CAKE

What the Heck Is Neurofeedback?

🍰 Top Slice

What we’ll learn this week:

  • That neurofeedback isn’t talking therapy, meditation, or mind control… but your brain watching itself in real time and quietly sorting its life out.
  • That sticking sensors on your head can look alarming, but feels surprisingly calm, focused and oddly satisfying.
  • That ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma and even migraines might have more to do with brain regulation than willpower.
  • That feeling tired after a session isn’t failure, it’s more like “brain gym soreness”.
It felt like real-time meditation… but with deer, pixels and my brain quietly checking itself."
Lee Crompton

🎤 This Week’s Episode

What the Heck Is Neurofeedback?

This week on Mind Cake, Lee and Paul are joined by Neurofeedback Scotland founders Suzanne and Helen to unpack what neurofeedback actually is, how it works, and why people are increasingly turning to brain-based therapies for mental wellbeing.

Lee shares his first-hand experience of a neurofeedback session. Reclined in a chair. Sensors on his head. A screen showing forests, vehicles and pixelated mist responding live to his brain activity.

Paul comes in completely cold. No prep. No Googling. Maximum curiosity.

Together, they explore:

  • 🧠 What neurofeedback really is (and what it definitely isn’t)
  • ⚡ How real-time EEG feedback helps the brain regulate itself
  • 🔁 Whether it’s training the brain or reminding it what it already knows
  • 🧘‍♂️ How it compares to meditation, mindfulness and focus training
  • 🔮 Where neurofeedback might fit into mental health care in the future

They also dip a toe into bioresonance therapy, described with surprising accuracy as “technological Reiki”, and discuss why some people explore these approaches when talking therapies haven’t quite landed.

No hype. No miracle claims. Just curiosity, lived experience, and honest questions.

MIND CAKE The newsletter that's slightly more helpful than doing nothing 🍰 This week: The Crack Is A Repair A few years ago, a Philadelphia Phillies fan made a social media post. He asked 45,000 fellow fans to do something that went against every instinct they had — to give a standing ovation to a player they'd been booing for months. What happened next became a Netflix documentary. What happened before it — a breakdown, a mental institution, two parents who refused to give up on their son —...

MIND CAKE The newsletter that's slightly more helpful than doing nothing 🍰 This week: How An Ewok Saved My Life Five years ago a very calm, very kind consultant sat across from me in a Glasgow hospital and told me I had six months to live. Last week I sat across from him with a cup of tea and talked about it. I wasn't sure how I'd feel recording this one. Turns out — surprisingly okay. Mostly because Omar Hilmi is one of the most quietly remarkable people I've ever met. And partly because we...
